Company History

Bartram Mowers was formed in 1972 by Barry Bartram and operated out of premises at Norwich airport, employing four people.

The largest part of the business was initially based around distribution of Flymo products through a network of approximately thirty dealers in Norfolk and Suffolk. The company philosophy was to only sell franchises that they could back up with an excellent spare parts service in combination with fully equipped workshop facilities. This belief continues today.

As well as distributing to other retailers the company also sold direct to the public and to Golf Clubs and local authorities. These markets also helped develop the spare parts and service side of the business.

With a large increase in the wholesaling side of the company new premises were required and at the end of 1979 we moved into new purpose built premises on a 20 acre site on the southern outskirts of Norwich where we remain today.

In 1983 we opened a depot in Ipswich which in 1988 we moved to purpose built premises on the Ransomes Park Industrial Estate offering showrooms, workshops and spare parts sections. The Ipswich depot operates in the same manner as Norwich without the national distribution business.

The Norwich building is 38,000 square feet and includes a large warehousing facility. The company can be divided into four departments:

1. Retail/Professional Sales. This involves selling direct to the public through the showroom or to Golf Clubs, local authorities, contractors, schools or any other professional user. The Textron Turfcare and speciality product franchises represent the largest part of our professional business, but also includes Echo, Amazone, JCB, Major, Wiedenmann and Wessex.

2. Trade/Multiple Wholesaling. This department sells to other specialist dealers, hardware stores and independent DIY retailers on a nationwide basis. Deliveries are made using carriers offering a next day delivery service for all orders placed by 3.00 pm.

3. Retail and Trade Spare Parts Sales. At both Norwich and Ipswich we sell spare parts for all the franchises we stock. We also sell to other specialist dealers all over the U.K. under the name Bartram Partmaster which we established to increase our trade sales of genuine spares. We do not sell any spurious spares that are not endorsed by the original equipment manufacturers. We have established EDI links with the manufacturers who supply parts to us through various service providers including Powercom and Hondacom systems. After nearly three years of development the company launched its updated parts website in October 2001. This provides online parts catalogues complete with exploded diagrams, a price enquiry database and the ability to order and pay on line. Other features include a replacement engine enquiry form. 4. Workshops. We have fully equipped service facilities at Norwich and Ipswich which service both domestic and professional equipment. We service all the machines we sell and any other equipment that we can win the service contracts for.

In 1978 we were awarded the Royal Warrant for supplying Ransomes equipment to Sandringham and we have enjoyed an on-going relationship with the Royal Estate since then.

We achieved BS5750 Part 2 in January 1992 and have since then gained the update to IS09001. This is all part of our commitment to total quality.

Bartram Mowers continues to achieve steady growth through continually trying to improve its service to its customers.

In 1995 Bartram Mowers committed itself to becoming an investor in people, and to achieve the recognition of this standard within a 2-year period. With our growing workforce and increasingly sophisticated working practices, it was felt that the introduction of more formalised processes to cover training and career development would benefit the company in its growth phase.
